If your baler, compactor or shredder doesn’t have the right size cylinder, enough horsepower or proper blade-size, the end-product that you are trying to produce may not capture you the maximum market value.
Many times, when a business decides to compact or bale their material, they will experience up to an 6:1 compaction ratio and even up to a 10:1 ratio when shredding or pre-crushing the material prior to compacting or baling.
Compaction Unlimited is a distributor for some of the world’s most dependable and highly respected waste & recycling equipment manufacturers. Because we are an independent distributor, we are able to right-size, design, locate and/or engineer the perfect baler, shredder, compactor, conveyor or sorting line to fit YOUR facility.

When considering a baler, there are several factors that go into determining the RIGHT baler for your facility. Volumes and types of material are the two biggest factors in determining this.
There are four basic questions you MUST answer when selecting the perfect baler for your facility.
What is the quantity of the material I will be baling? This determines if you will need a Vertical or a Horizontal baler. If you are processing no more than 4500 lbs of any particular commodity per day, a Vertical baler will meet your needs. If you are processing over 4500 lbs a day, a Horizontal will best fit your needs. Also, please keep in mind that the horsepower of the unit will determine the speed at which it cycles. Again, if you are creating two to three bales per day, a 10-hp unit will be fine. If you plan to create four of more bales a day, a 15 or 20 hp unit may be better suited for you. It also depends on the material you are actually baling.
How big of a Cylinder do I need? The main determining factor for this question is based on the type of material you will be baling. If you are baling loose paper or, small amounts of corrugated boxes a 6″ Cylinder will serve the purpose. If you are baling plastics, you may want to consider a 7″ or 8″ Cylinder. Ideally, 10″+ Cylinders are best for non-ferrous metals, however, an 8″ Cylinder will work for smaller metals.
What size hopper or, feed-opening do I need? This is simply based on the size and quantity of material being baled. Basic office paper mix and corrugated boxes up to 36″x36″ will fit 99% of the standard vertical and horizontal feed openings. However, if you are processing high volumes (4+ bales a day) of this material via a sorting conveyor or Bobcat grapple, you will want an extended or, larger hopper/feed opening. Plus, larger items will obviously require a larger or extended hopper / feed-opening.
How much space do I have available for my baler? Vertical balers are pretty similar in size with an average being about 6/7′ wide, 8′ deep with the eject door open and 12′ to the top of the Cylinder. Horizontal balers, on the other hand, range in size from 12′ long to 50′ and anywhere from 7′ to 30′ wide and can weight over 30 tons.
Vertical Balers
A vertical baler is typically fed through a front-feed opening. The Cylinder is on top of the material and bales downward. All verticals are manual-tie and eject through a front door onto a forklift or pallet-jack. Verticals are typically used for low-volume processors.
Closed-Door Horizontal Balers
A closed-end Horizontal baler is just that; the eject-end of the baler has a closed door in order for the bale to be manually tied off after completion. The Cylinder runs horizontal to the ground. A closed-door horizontal is the most economical of the horizontal balers.
Auto-Tie Horizontal Balers
An Automatic-tie Horizontal baler bales much faster than the closed-door system. It is used for mid to large volume processors and is usually conveyor or bobcat fed.
Two-Ram Horizontal Balers
The Two-ram Horizontal baler is basically an Auto-tie with dual Cylinders. This is the largest and most expensive balers on the market and are typically used for the largest processors, such as MRF’s, Metal scrap yards, etc.
The New Orwak, 110V Mobile Baler
The Orwak balers and compactors are very small, portable units that run off 110V. Perfect for tight places, or facilities with long walks to main disposal area. Basic footprint is approximately 3.5′Wx3Dx5′H on casters.
Many times, when a business decides to compact or bale their material, they will experience up to an 6:1 compaction ratio and even up to a 10:1 ratio when shredding or pre-crushing the material prior to compacting or baling.
100% WASTE DIVERSION: recycling your commodities helps keep the material out of landfills.
INCREASE REVENUES: when you separate and bale or compact your recyclables, your value per ton increases.
SAVES SPACE: compacted or baled material will save space in your warehouse/facility.
DISCOURAGES SCAVENGERS & STOPS PILFERAGE: keeps scavengers out of your containers.
SAVES LABOR: with easy loading into a baler or compactor, it eliminates breaking down of bulky materials by hand.
REDUCES COLLECTION COSTS: in most cases, your waste and/or recycling commodities are reduced in volume at a ratio of up to 4 to 1.
PREVENTS WINDBLOWN TRASH: no continual sweeping/cleaning of your parking lot.
REDUCES FIRE HAZARDS: may save on insurance.
ODOR CONTROL: sealed containers and optional odor control devices significantly reduce odors.
EXTENDS PAVEMENT LIFE: less heavily-loaded traffic and fewer pick-ups reduces wear and tear of parking lots.
PREVENTS UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO YOUR TRASH: safely sealed containers prevent others from using your bin.
FEWER CLEANUP PROBLEMS: tightly sealed container reduces chances of spills and leaks.
BIN DAMAGE/FIRES: a sealed container reduces vandalism opportunities.
COLLECTION COSTS: higher rate for compacted refuse is acceptable and expected.
LIQUID RETENTION: self-contained compactors retain all liquids.
